This is an approximate comparison, not a real physical equivalent — thrust (force, in lbs) and gas-engine power (work over time, in HP) are two different physical quantities that can't be precisely converted without knowing boat speed. The power equivalent uses the rule of thumb commonly used in the industry, ~75 lbs of thrust ≈ 1 HP (used e.g. when comparing trolling motors to small gas outboards). Rated power in HP is an exact unit conversion (1 HP = 745.7 W) — it shows the motor's power draw, not its real-world "horsepower" pull on the water.
Customers often ask how an electric motor "compares" to a gas outboard — e.g. how many horsepower the Protruar 5.0S has. This isn't a 1:1 comparison: an electric motor has full torque from zero RPM and works completely differently than a gas engine with a gearbox and a prop tuned for high RPM.
